Hello all
I would be grateful if anybody can give me some advice as I am so weary of having constant pain running from my shoulders right down my arms to the wrist and hands. I think all the muscles and tendons are inflamed and have some lumpy bits on the underside of my wrist. I get a relief from soaking my arms in hot water especially before going to bed.
Just to say I have failed on leflunomide over the past nine months my GP put me back on steroids awaiting to go on infliximab. I am trying to stay at 7.5mg having taken a quite a lot over the last 18 months of having RA. I saw my consultant privately in mid July, when he said about going on the anti tnf, as that was the only way of seeing him and basically he told me he is in dire straits as he cannot cope with the level of patients he needs to treat and the hierarchy at the hospital have refused to take on another consultant, the specialist nurse helpline is closed and my GP is sympathetic but that is all. It feels like you are waiting forever and when you have some much pain it of course makes it worse, like I m sure we all know.
Many thanks
Julia

Dear Julia, Oh I am so sorry that you are suffering with the constant pain running down your arms into wrists, hands, etc! I truely sympathize because for years I had severe hand and wrist pain and had to wear splints day and night. My problem was Carpel Tunnel syndrome and in the end the pain was going up my arms and my fingers were clawed in the mornings when I got up. I had surgery to free the Carpel Tunnel in each wrist, but 8 months apart. It was truely amazing for me and looking back I can only shudder when I remember how constant and limiting the pain used to be. Have you had a nerve conduction test done to see if you could be being effected by Carpel Tunnel Syndrome? Your Rheumatologist can arrange this, or maybe even your G.P could. Thinking of you, Best wishes, Fiona

Thanks Fiona for advice and support.
I June of this year I went and had an MRI can on my hands and wrists, and the pain I went through in my shoulders was unimaginable and suffered for days afterwards. Well to date I have tried to obtain the results and have got nowhere - I was sent to another hospital for this scan and can only guess what may have happened. My shoulders have always been really bad and my first taste of RA was severe pain in my upper arm. When I eventually get back to the hospital I will bring up the Carpel Tunnel S. with them thanks.
Take care too, Julia x

Hi Julia,
I'm so sorry you are suffering with so much pain . It's dreadful that you have not yet had the results of the MRI done in June. Can your GP chase up the results? I sympathise with the problems you are having being seen at your hospital. My consultant walked out in January and the rheumy department closed. They still have not got a new consultant after 10 months. If your GP will not help with getting the MRI results, get onto PALS , I am sure they will be able to help. Hope you can get some relief from the pain soon.
Love, Doreen xx

Sorry your in so much pain and especially at night. Last night my hip was so bad I took a hot water bottle to bed, wrapped it in a pillow slip then kept it as close as possible to my hip. Helped to ease the pain, maybe give it a try. Kathleen xx

Thanks Doreen for your thoughts, it certainly is a post code lottery ! I think my consultant would ideally like to go, but is holding in there - but for how long ? It is terrible especially with all the talk on the news about maintaining the level of care in the health service. My GP has told me, and his other patients with RA to write a complaining letter to the hospital but the way I have been feeling it all seems too much, perhaps should send it straight to Andrew Lansley the Health Secretary !
Thanks for the tip Kathleen with the hot water bottle, have to hunt my one out !

Hi Julia ,i had carpel tunnel, inflammation and all the horrible pain aswell. I found my tens machine gave me some relief for a little while now and again . This was before the MTX kicked in. But there where times nothing really helped so i know what you are going through. Kathleen Mc.

Hi JUlia, poor you having all this pain. A hottie sounds like a good remedy, what about an electric blanket on low? Mine helps me no end.
Take care and hope you get sorted soon

My goodness, that sounds like pure negligence to not have been given your results from the MRI in June! you poor love!
Ringing PALS is a good idea and also asking (demanding!) your GP/rheumy chase this up- your health and well being is far too precious.....
Much love,
Amanda

hi julia
with regards you getting the results a lot of hospitals won't give patients the results ( i know this as we find the same problem at the surgery i work at)
get you GP to chase them thats what he/his receptionists are for i'm chasing results all the time
because the tests are requested by the hospital the GP does'nt get to see them unless he requestes to help with treatment
if you are waiting for further hosp appointment maybe he can help in the mean time
hope this helps

Hi Julia
One of the first problems I experienced was tendonitis in my wrist. This cleared up once hydroxy kicked in. I then went on to get hip and thigh pain in both legs which an MRI showed as bursitis/tendonis. Added to this a piece of disc broke away in my spine which gave me horrendous pain. My specialist put me on amitriptyline which has helped with all these aches and pains. It could be that you have some nerve inflammation caused by the tendonitis so perhaps you could discuss this with you doc to see if this drug could give you some relief.
Best wishes Brenda
